Few household labels of the 1850s tied a bar of soap to national politics as openly as this one. The name refers to the Know Nothing movement, formally the American Party, a nativist political force that surged in the mid-1850s and drew much of its strength from opposition to immigration and Catholicism. The Boston firm Geo. A. Hill & Co., of Federal Street, borrowed that political moment to sell soap. The label's second subject, Indians of North America, reflects the period's wide use of popular, often stereotyped imagery in advertising. Its copyright deposit in October 1854 places it at the height of the party's early success.
