Its title sets it apart: a call for "the last offer of reconciliation" in memory of President Lincoln, under the words "The door is open for all." Published in New York in 1865, the year Lincoln was assassinated, it reflects an effort to turn national grief toward reunion as the country weighed how to bring the South back into the Union. Lincoln's second inaugural, delivered that March, had urged the nation to act "with malice toward none," and prints like this carried that appeal into homes. H. Thomas is credited with the design, Kimmel & Forster produced the lithograph, and watercolor was added by hand.
