A half-plate daguerreotype shows John Sherman (1823-1900) head and shoulders, facing the camera full on. The sitting falls between 1840 and 1860, when he was roughly 17 to 37, during the years this process was most popular. Daguerreotypes were made on silvered copper plates, so the image shows clearly only at certain angles and scratches easily, which is why sitters often kept them in small cases. The photographer is unidentified, but the oval frame design on the case back reflects the period's taste for compact keepsake portraits, which gave many ordinary people their first affordable likeness of themselves or their families.
