This drawing sets out the Library of Harvard College in two views: a plan that shows how the rooms and stacks were laid out on the floor, and sections that cut through the building to reveal its height, floor levels, and interior spaces. Together they show how an architect planned for the growing collection of a college library, which by the nineteenth century was outgrowing its original quarters. Library designs of this period often had to balance reading rooms, book storage, and light, and the cut-away sections make those choices easy to follow. Drawings like this were working documents for builders as much as presentations, so they reward close study of the dimensions and partitions.
