Unlike many views of the Princeton campus, this record pairs an interior with a floor plan, which lets viewers see how the library was arranged as well as how it looked. For much of the college's early history, its books were housed in Nassau Hall, the 1756 building that served as the center of campus life. During the American Revolution, British troops occupied the building after the Battle of Princeton in 1777, and the library suffered heavy losses. Drawings like this one show how a rare, closely built collection of shelves and reading space was organized in a period when libraries were often the heart of a college.
