Tupelo, in northeast Mississippi, is the setting, and the catalog keeps the period title "Negro house" as it was filed in 1936. The picture comes from the Farm Security Administration files, a New Deal documentary project that began under the Resettlement Administration and recorded rural life and housing across the South during the Depression. Its subject is the dwelling itself, a modest structure in a town surrounded by farmland. Viewers often study such images for the construction, materials and yard spaces they show about working families of that era.
