Here the subject is John Chapman, the frontier nurseryman known as Johnny Appleseed (1774-1845), who planted apple orchards across Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois and became a folk hero in the decades after his death. William Gropper, a New York artist associated with the social realist movement of the 1930s and 1940s, drew this portrait as a lithograph in 1941, signing it both on the stone and in pencil. The print belongs to a wave of American art that reinterpreted pioneer legends, often through the lens of hard work and the common man, and Gropper's portrait gives Chapman a plainspoken, weathered presence rather than the whimsical tone of later storybooks.
