A bird's-eye view of Anoka, the seat of Anoka County in Minnesota, gives a rare look at a small river town as it appeared in 1869, drawn from an elevated angle so that streets, blocks and buildings can be read at a glance. The artist, A. Ruger, was one of the many draftsmen who produced these panoramic town views for lithographic firms in the late nineteenth century, when Americans wanted to see their growing communities laid out like a map with the houses rendered in detail. Anoka sat on the Mississippi River northwest of Minneapolis, and views like this one were often sold to residents and local businesses as a source of civic pride.
