A woman in a long dress stands at the center of this Halloween postcard, a verse printed beneath her as the picture's main text. Postcards of this kind were mass-produced in the early twentieth century, when holiday cards were a popular way to send seasonal greetings through the mail. Designs often mixed autumn imagery such as harvest colors and ornamental borders with lighthearted or playful verse. Notice how the printed rhyme and the figure work together, since the verse was usually the point of the card while the illustration set its tone.
