Few holiday postcards from the early twentieth century were as crowded with motifs as this one, which pairs a witch with a row of grinning jack-o'-lanterns. Halloween cards of this era were mass-produced, often printed in color lithography and mailed between friends and relatives in the weeks before October 31. Their imagery drew on folk customs of the season, when harvest-time pranks, fortune-telling and ghost stories were common. Look closely at the lantern faces and the witch's pointed hat, which show how these cards turned a rural tradition into a playful, lighthearted greeting.
