Few holiday postcards capture the Halloween mood as neatly as this one, which pairs a witch stirring a bubbling cauldron with an owl perched nearby under a night sky. The owl and cauldron are the standard symbols of the early twentieth-century Halloween card, when printers in the United States and Europe turned out large numbers of lithographed greetings to mark the holiday. Cards of this kind were often mailed to friends and relatives, and their bright colors and playful, slightly spooky imagery reflect a period when Halloween was shifting from folk custom toward a family celebration.
