A witch, a boy and a bell share the frame of this Halloween Greetings postcard, a small piece of ephemera that shows how the holiday was marketed to children in the early twentieth century. Holiday postcards of this kind were mass-produced by printers and sent between friends and relatives, often with a short handwritten note on the back. The bell may be a nod to the old custom of ringing or the noisy revelry of the night, while the witch and the boy point to the costumed play that became central to American Halloween. Look closely at the colors and lettering, which tell you a good deal about the printing methods of the period.
