A toast raised to the horse show gives this picture its particular character, shifting the focus from the animals in the ring to the social occasion around them. It dates from between 1922 and 1932, a period when horse shows drew crowds and remained a popular pastime among riding clubs and the well-to-do, even as the automobile was steadily replacing the horse for everyday travel. The print comes from the National Photo Company Collection, made by a commercial studio whose pictures record American life in the early twentieth century.
