Held at Madison Square Garden from March 11 to 23, 1916, this bazaar charged a quarter for admission and aimed its fundraising at the widows and orphans of soldiers from Germany, Austria-Hungary and their allies. The German-born artist Winold Reiss, who had recently moved to New York, designed the lithograph, which uses flags to signal the cause. The United States was still neutral then, and drives like this one show how deeply the war divided American communities well before the country entered it in 1917.
