The surviving title breaks off after "Fighting in France for," so the exact cause the fighting was meant to serve is left open. The 1918 date places it in the final year of the war, when American troops were fighting alongside the Allies on the Western Front in long, costly battles across trenches and shell-torn ground. Wartime images like this were often made to show the public the sacrifices asked of soldiers and of families at home. The incomplete caption is itself a reminder that titles from this period were sometimes shortened or lost as pictures passed between hands.
