A war dance performed inside an "African village" display sets this print apart from the many views of exhibition life from the period. Around 1901, world's fairs and midway attractions in the United States and Europe often built re-created villages where people from colonized regions were displayed living, working, and dancing for paying crowds, a practice now widely criticized for its distortions. The caption card behind this record is old and unverified, so the exact location and the identities of those pictured remain uncertain, though the copyright credit to C.D. Arnold records who registered the image. Today the picture is most useful as evidence of how such shows framed African peoples for their audiences.
