Women workers in Chicago's toy industry are the focus of this photograph, dated November 4, 1930, when factories were gearing up for the holiday season. Toy makers of the period often hired many women for detailed hand work, and model airplanes were a popular product after Charles Lindbergh's 1927 transatlantic flight. The picture offers a glimpse of seasonal production that kept workers busy in the months before Christmas, even as the early Depression was tightening household budgets.
