Pennsburg, a small community in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, sat in the Perkiomen Valley in 1894, a farming region settled largely by German-speaking families whose descendants worked the surrounding fields of grain, dairy, and orchard fruit. Rail lines and country roads linked the town to Philadelphia and to the larger towns of the county, carrying produce and manufactured goods in both directions. Perkiomen Seminary, a school with a long reputation in the valley, drew students from neighboring counties and gave the town an educational and religious character that residents would have recognized at once. This view shows the streets, churches, and mills as they stood in the mid-1890s, before automobiles and later highway building reshaped the valley's roads.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Pennsburgh, Pennsylvania, drawn in 1894. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
