Few of Houdini's stunts drew as much attention in Boston as his leap from the Harvard Bridge, which spans the Charles River between the city and Cambridge. Shackled and fighting free of his restraints in the water below, he turned a public jump into a test of his escape skills. This lantern slide is one of four made to be projected for audiences, and its caption, "Master of the Impossible Possible," shows how carefully his promoters framed each feat as a challenge to death and confinement. Such slides let people who never saw the act in person follow it on a screen.
