Harold Bell Wright was a novelist whose popular books, including "The Shepherd of the Hills" (1907), made him one of the best-selling American writers of the early twentieth century. This glass negative comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, the body of pictures made by the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency that supplied newspapers with images of public figures and current events from about 1900 to 1920. The record gives no date and notes that the identification is unverified, so the sitter's name rests on the caption card rather than on documentation confirming it. Glass negatives like this one were the working medium of press photographers of the period, and their small size reflects how such images were made and filed for quick reproduction.
