Cadets from the U.S. Military Academy and the U.S. Naval Academy filled the stands and sidelines for their annual football meeting in late November 1916, a contest that had been a fixture of the Thanksgiving season since 1890. The picture comes from the Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold news photographs to newspapers, and its George Grantham Bain Collection now at the Library of Congress preserves thousands of such images from the early twentieth century. Photographs like this one show how large the rivalry had become and how closely civilian crowds followed the service academies' games.
