A portrait of Clarence J. McLeod, dated March 31, 1924, survives on a small glass negative, which makes it one of the more fragile formats from that era. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., firm active from about 1907 to the mid-1930s, recorded the city's residents, streets, and public life, and its negatives reached the Library of Congress as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947. The title comes from unverified information the company wrote on the negative or its sleeve. Visible streaks and blemishes are typical of glass plates whose coatings have deteriorated over time.
