A one-armed draftsman works at his board with a compass and T-square, using his good hand and the stump of his other arm to hold the instruments. The poster's caption argues that mechanical drafting suited men who had lost a limb, since the trade depends on skill rather than two full hands. It was issued for an exhibit by the Red Cross Institute for Crippled and Disabled Men, one of the programs that retrained wounded and disabled men during and after the First World War. The poster reflects a wider postwar effort to return injured veterans to paid work, and its message is that disability need not end a man's livelihood.
