The Palm Court was one of the most fashionable public rooms aboard the White Star liner Olympic, which entered service in 1911 and was the first of the three great ships of her class. Passengers on the Atlantic run came here to take tea, listen to music, and be seen, with potted palms and an airy, glass-roofed setting meant to echo the leisure of a grand hotel. William H. Rau, a Philadelphia photographer who made a business of documenting steamships and railroads, copyrighted this photoprint, and his work is valued for showing the interiors of liners as they were presented to the public. The record notes that its details come from an old caption card and have not been verified.
