Few documents in American history have been reproduced as often as the Declaration of Independence. Congress adopted the text on July 4, 1776, but most delegates did not sign the engrossed parchment until August 2 of that year. Printmakers in the 19th century produced illustrated versions of the text for homes, schools and public buildings, often pairing the words with ornament, portraits of the signers and patriotic symbols. Such prints turned a legal document into a display piece that many Americans could hang on their walls.
