Marianne, the figure long used as France's national emblem, anchors this large color lithograph advertising "Hero Land" at New York's Grand Central Palace, open November 24 through December 12, 1917, with admission set at 50 cents. The poster is signed by A. Rapeño of Paris, and its design reflects the Republic's symbolic role during the First World War. Color lithographs like this were a common way to draw public attention and support for the Allied cause, and this sheet shows how such French-themed events were promoted to American audiences after the United States entered the war in April 1917.
