Few details survive for this glass negative, which the record lists only as "Dynamo test." The title comes from caption information written by the Bain News Service, a New York press photography agency that sent pictures of news events, machinery and public life to newspapers in the early 1900s. Dynamos, the generators that turned mechanical motion into electrical current, were central to the electrification of factories, streetcar lines and city power plants in that period. Images like this one show how engineers checked new equipment before it went into service, and the glass plate format of the time records fine detail in the metal and machinery.
