The lecture room of P. T. Barnum's new American Museum, at 539 and 541 Broadway between Spring and Prince streets, is the focus of this wood engraving from *Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper* in its September 30, 1865 issue. Barnum's original museum had burned in July 1865, and he quickly reopened in a new building on the same stretch of Broadway. The lecture room was a central part of that venue, where talks, demonstrations, and performances were given alongside the museum's exhibits of curiosities, natural history, and live shows. Barnum's mix of respectable lectures and popular spectacle made the museum one of New York's best-known attractions of the period.
