Titled *Silence Dissenters*, this charcoal and black ink drawing on a large white sheet makes its argument in its title alone. It is catalogued as dating from about 1954, the height of the Senate investigations led by Joseph McCarthy, when accusations of disloyalty pressed on writers, teachers, entertainers and government employees, and many lost jobs or were blacklisted. The Library of Congress subject headings tie the work to censorship and McCarthyism in the 1950s. The drawing was later added to the Library's holdings as part of the David Levine collection, and Levine's pen-and-ink style is worth noticing for how it turns political pressure into a pointed image.
