Two small birds perch among clusters of forget-me-nots on this postcard, a sentimental pairing that fits the Valentine's Day theme of the board. Embossed and hand-tinted cards of this kind were produced in large numbers in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when sending a card was a common way to express affection without speaking it aloud. Forget-me-nots carried a well-known meaning of enduring remembrance, so the flowers and the paired birds together made a quiet message of loyalty. The inscription "To my Valentine" anchors the image to its purpose.
