This glass negative is titled "Eki Hioki," a name the Library of Congress lists as unverified, taken from the Bain News Service's own negative sleeves or caption cards, and no date is recorded. Bain News Service was a New York picture agency founded by George Grantham Bain that supplied newspapers with photographs of people and events in the news, mostly in the early twentieth century. Its glass negatives, many of them portraits, make up a large part of the collection, so the image is best read as a working news photograph of its era. Since the sitter's identity and the occasion are not confirmed, the name is worth checking against the catalog record before drawing conclusions.
