This glass negative is titled for Joseph Caillaux, the French politician who served as prime minister in 1911 and 1912 and held the finance portfolio in several governments. The Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied news photographs to American newspapers, distributed many portraits of European public figures during the years before and during the First World War. Caillaux's career drew wide attention, especially his campaign for an income tax in France and the 1914 scandal in which his second wife shot the editor of *Le Figaro*. The record gives no date, and the title comes from unverified agency data, so the occasion for the portrait is unknown.
