Blanche Sweet was a silent-film actress whose career ran from the early Biograph shorts of the 1910s into the sound era, and this glass negative is one of the portraits made by the Bain News Service, a Manhattan picture agency that sold news and celebrity images to newspapers and magazines. The record gives no date, and the title comes from caption information the agency wrote on the negative or its card, which the Library of Congress notes has not been independently verified. Bain's glass plates were made during the early twentieth century, when studio portraits of stage and screen performers were prized for publicity and print use, so the picture reflects how stars were presented to the public in that period.
