The setting is the Battery, the park at the southern tip of Manhattan, though that location rests on caption data the Bain News Service recorded without verification. The agency photographed New York streets, waterfronts and civic life in the early twentieth century, and its glass negatives document a period when firefighting moved from horse-drawn equipment to motor apparatus. The exposure is undated, so the exact year is unknown, but the engines and station architecture are worth studying for what they show about that transition.
