Billed as a magician and illusionist, Von Arx appears here in a portrait poster, a format that let touring performers announce themselves to a town before the show arrived. Posters like this were usually printed in quantity and pasted on fences, storefronts and walls along a tour route, so the image had to hold attention at a glance. Stage magic drew large crowds in the late 1800s and early 1900s through traveling shows, vaudeville houses and circuses. The lettering and styling of such posters often show how a performer wanted to be remembered.
