The St. James Bar Restaurant stood at West 181st Street and Broadway, on the commercial stretch of Washington Heights in northern Manhattan. This elevation proposes changes to its street front, drawn around 1945 or 1946, just after the end of World War II, when many New York businesses updated their storefronts to attract returning servicemen and a booming postwar public. The sheet was made as a diazo print, a cheap blueprint-style copy, and someone added graphite and gouache color by hand to show the proposed finishes. That painted color, rather than the line work alone, is what lets a viewer picture how the building was meant to look on the street.
