Pictures titled simply "Thanksgiving" usually turn to the same scenes: the laden dinner table, the family gathered at home, or the church service that marked the day. The holiday traces back to the 1621 harvest feast at Plymouth, though that gathering was not widely retold as a national origin story until the 19th century. President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national day of thanksgiving in 1863, and Congress later fixed the holiday on the fourth Thursday in November. Images from the early 20th century often present it as a time of home, plenty and civic pride.
