Thanksgiving as a national holiday in the United States has a long and somewhat uneven history, and this picture belongs to a body of imagery that helped fix its家庭 and harvest-table look in the public mind. Holiday scenes of this kind were widely reproduced in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when magazines and printers were turning domestic life into a shared national symbol. Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national day of thanksgiving in 1863, and the holiday was fixed on the last Thursday of November in 1941 by an act of Congress. Look closely at the table, the dress of those gathered, and the setting, since such details tell you as much about the period's ideas of family and abundance as about the meal itself.
