Twenty ōban sheets mounted on a single scroll set this group apart, and the record ties the series to the kabuki actor Nakamura Shikan, who lived from 1831 to 1899. These are nishiki-e, or brocade prints, full-color woodblock works produced in Edo, where portraits of popular actors in their stage roles were a major commercial genre. Several artists contributed, including Utagawa Kunisada (also known as Toyokuni), Toyohara Kunichika, and Utagawa Kuniaki, which shows how a set of actor likenesses from the early 1860s could be assembled by more than one hand.
