The aqueduct at Segovia, known locally as El Puente, is among the best-preserved Roman engineering works in Spain. Its tall double tiers of granite arches, laid without mortar, once carried water several miles from the Sierra de Guadarrama into the city, and it probably dates to the late first or early second century. This photochrom, one of the color prints from the early 1900s, shows the structure as it stood in that period, when tourists and travel publishers were drawn to Spain's Roman and medieval monuments. The process layered several stone-printed color plates over a photographic image, so the warm tones of the stone and sky are part of the print's character.
