Signed in pencil by the artist to the photographer Frances Benjamin Johnston, with a note calling her "his No. 1 fan" and dated May 5, 1943, this etching is one of an edition of 100 and carries a personal inscription that most prints of the period lack. Its catalog subject is cliff dwellings in Pittsburgh, a reminder that the city's steep hillsides held houses perched above rail lines and river flats. Made in the early 1940s, when Pittsburgh's steel mills were running at full wartime pace, the work shows a city whose dense, vertical neighborhoods were shaped as much by terrain as by industry.
