A balloon named Conqueror, entered by the United States, rises above Berlin in this 1908 view, placing it among the ballooning contests of that year. Berlin hosted the Gordon Bennett Cup in 1908, an international race in which crews launched from one city and tried to travel the farthest before landing. The photograph comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of news pictures made by the Bain News Service for newspaper use. The title comes from caption data recorded by the service and is not fully verified, so the identification of the balloon is worth checking against other sources.
