Few pieces of late-Victorian ephemera carry a more surprising signature than the cover of *The Motograph Moving Picture Book*, which was designed by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, the French painter best known for his posters of Paris cabarets and music halls. Published in London by Bliss, Sands in 1898, the small book was meant to be riffled so that its illustrations by F. J. Vernay and others seemed to move, and a transparent viewing screen let readers look at the pictures on the go. It appeared just as film was emerging as a popular entertainment. The book was later shown in the Williams College of Art exhibition *Moving Pictures*, which explored the uneasy relationship between American art and early film.
