The caption names a shrine to Marquis Inouye, most likely Inoue Kaoru (1836–1915), a Meiji-era statesman who helped modernize Japan and became one of its senior elder statesmen. Memorial shrines to such leaders were a way for Japanese society to honor their service, and the subject ties the picture to Japan's rapid transformation in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The image is a glass negative from the Bain News Service, a New York agency that circulated news photographs in the early twentieth century. Because the title was recorded without verification, the exact location and date remain uncertain.
