The poster's title is simply "The journal," abbreviated on the record as "LJR," and its pairing of chariots and angels sets it apart from the more typical product advertising of its day. Liebler & Maass, a New York lithographic firm, printed this color poster in 1896, during the decade when American magazines and publishers turned to large, eye-catching lithographs to win readers on city streets and in shop windows. Such posters often borrowed grand classical or allegorical imagery to suggest the prestige and imagination of the publication they promoted. The record offers little more detail about the specific periodical, so the design is best read as an example of the period's commercial art.
