Among the many religious prints of its era, this hand-colored lithograph is distinguished by its direct focus on Moses as a biblical leader, with the Ten Commandments named in its subject headings. Published in New York around 1874 by H. Schile, who also secured a copyright for the design, it belongs to a wave of popular chromolithographs that brought scripture into American parlors. Such images were typically sold to Protestant and Jewish households alike, and they reflect how strongly the story of the lawgiver and the tablets resonated with nineteenth-century viewers. The hand coloring, added to the printed sheet, gave each copy a slightly different look.
