The Harlem River, the narrow tidal strait separating Manhattan from the Bronx, has long been a training water for oarsmen, and this panoramic view captures rowing boats working its current. Panoramic photographs were popular in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when long-format prints let viewers take in a whole waterfront at once. Here the sweep of the river shows how crews, skiffs and shells shared the water with the bridges and shoreline of a rapidly growing city. Look closely at the boats and their oars to see how much of the scene depends on coordinated timing.
