This drawing, done in India ink over pencil on illustration board, is a hand-made rendering of the Marx Brothers rather than a photograph, and the pencil lines still show beneath the inking. The record dates it only to a span from 1921 to 1933, when the brothers moved from vaudeville to Broadway revues and then to Hollywood, where their first feature film came out in 1929. Their anarchic stage routines, with Groucho's rapid-fire wisecracks and Harpo's silent clowning, drew many illustrators of the period. The drawing's bold black lines are worth noticing for how they capture that physical, chaotic energy on paper.
