Broadway producer Earl Carroll is pictured judging Washington, D.C., women hoping to appear in his 1925 *Vanities* revue. Carroll, who lived from 1893 to 1948, staged the *Vanities* as a glamorous rival to Florenz Ziegfeld's *Follies*, and its showgirls were a major draw on the New York stage. The picture comes from the National Photo Company, whose photographers documented Washington life in the mid-1920s, when beauty contests were a popular way to bring newspaper attention to theater productions. Taken in January 1925, it shows a New York showman looking for talent well outside Broadway.
