Trams running down the middle of a busy city street set this scene apart from the horse-and-carriage era, and the corner buildings anchor it in one place. Corner lots of that period often held saloons or taverns, since intersections drew foot traffic and streetcar riders. Streetcars were then the main way many city residents got to work and to shops, so the street would have been crowded with people as well as vehicles. Study the storefront signs and upper windows for clues about the businesses that once occupied the ground floors.
